Book Review: Ice - The Poseidon's Girls Trilogy

Synopsis

She won’t melt.
Everything was perfect.
With a future career in surfing and an ocean-front home, Iris Glass is one teenager who thinks she is in paradise. Her dad is the head of the police department, her mother a successful business woman. Her twin sister is a spoilt brat, but what family doesn’t have one?
Then their 18th birthday comes around.
Nothing will be the same again.

My Review

This is the first book in a three book series by M.S. Watson. This book is 163 pages long.

Myths were supposed to be just that...Myths. But when two twins end up abandoned and left to die. Myths become a reality and these two twins find that out on their eighteenth birthday. Their powers are only surfacing and the danger ahead is unbelievable.... But there are people trying to protect them, as well as gods and goddesses. Iris's surfing dream is put on hold when a fishy situation changes her and her sister into new beings. Where are the twin's parents? What threat is trying to surface?

I loved this book. Greek Mythology is my favorite, but I love all mythology. The author gave Lanie some freaky flaws and I found myself slightly disgusted by Lanie's catty spoiledness. I can't wait to read the second book!! This is a book for all ages and there is barely any romance. The romance in this book isn't consuming... It is just a cute little side of the story.

Book Review: The Neverland Wars by Audrey Greathouse

Synopsis

Magic can do a lot—give you flight, show you mermaids, help you taste the stars, and… solve the budget crisis? That's what the grown-ups will do with it if they ever make it to Neverland to steal its magic and bring their children home.
However, Gwen doesn't know this. She's just a sixteen-year-old girl with a place on the debate team and a powerful crush on Jay, the soon-to-be homecoming king. She doesn't know her little sister could actually run away with Peter Pan, or that she might have to chase after her to bring her home safe. Gwen will find out though—and when she does, she'll discover she's in the middle of a looming war between Neverland and reality.
She'll be out of place as a teenager in Neverland, but she won't be the only one. Peter Pan's constant treks back to the mainland have slowly aged him into adolescence as well. Soon, Gwen will have to decide whether she's going to join impish, playful Peter in his fight for eternal youth… or if she's going to scramble back to reality in time for the homecoming dance.

Samantha's Review

First let me say, I have never read the original Peter Pan. Also, I was never a fan of the cartoon or play. I just also found Peter Pan annoying and boring.

Now that I've said that, let me say I really liked this book. I liked the modern twist. Like Peter Pan was still around today and taking kids to Neverland.

It was really written well. It flowed nicely and didn't have any slow parts that held me up.

My only negative is that is ends in a huge cliffhanger. One of those cliffhangers that has you turning the page wondering where the next chapter is. I'm really hoping there is a book two in the works since there was no 'sneak preview' of the next book at the end of it. If you do not like cliff hangers you will find the ending very frustrating.

Additionally, it lost a partial star rating because at the very end of the book there is a rather lot of cussing (for such a small few pages) and there is drinking and drug use. This is simply a 'Belle's Beastly Book Blog' rating system regarding how clean a book is and may not bother all readers.

Samantha's Review

I went into this story a little leary because a lot of mermaid tales tend to have sex and nudity in them. But I was very surprised to find that it didn't! These teen mers are modest, even their 'curse' words tend to be comical (eg: "holy starfish") which some may find silly but I enjoyed.

Within the first few chapters I was pulled into this story. I found myself a member of their world, which was due to the good writing and description of the author.
I would highly recommend this book for tweens, teens and adults who enjoy a mermaid tale. Be warned, though, this is a series and the story is a bit unfinished (cliffhanger). I don't mind it, because I like them, but some readers might not.

Book Review: Hook's Little Mermaid - The Untold Stories Series

Synopsis

Captain James Hook was once a good man trying to make a somewhat honest living. He is a pirate, after all. However, after getting word that a boy named Peter Pan played a part in the death of a dear loved one, Hook makes it his sole purpose to hunt down and destroy the fiend.
On his journey for vengeance, the captain encounters many new comrades, including a young girl named Red and a fairy called Tinker Bell, and both push him to reconsider his desire for justice.

The accidental rescue of a mermaid leads him on a whirlwind adventure in Neverland. The journey is not a simple one, considering Pan, the Lost Boys, mermaids, and magic all come into play. After several misadventures, Hook must choose between the possibility of a new life with love and his much-desired retaliation against Pan.

Once everything is said and done, will the captain be able to overcome his need for revenge? Will he let compassion steer him toward love? Or will Captain Hook live up to his villainous reputation?

My Review

This is the first book in the Untold Stories Series by Suzanna Lynn. This book is 260 pages long.

Captain James Hook is what most fear, a pirate. Once a low boy working as a petty little deck cleaner, he now runs the famous "Jolly Roger". Hook is on a strike for vengeance and he won't stop until he can drive his sword through the heart of Peter Pan. To find Pan, he has to get to Neverland. How can he get to Neverland without flying? On Hook's quest, he meets a cute fairy named Tinkerbell and she promises him a favor. When Hook and his crew are out on the ocean, he meets a sea witch with the beautiful revenge in her mind. Hook meets another mermaid, one with the power to change his pirate ways. He might have to sacrifice his vengeance for her. Can Hook really give up his pirate ways? Better yet, can Hook give up revenge for Peter, the mermaid's friend?

I loved this book. There are many different versions of the original fairy tales and this is one of the best ones yet. Incorporating multiple fairy tales makes it even more interesting. There is mild language. It didn't have anything bad to really say. For those who don't know, this is my mom's book. Many would say this is a conflict of interest, so I am not going to post my review to Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Her next books are going to connect to this book too, so I'm excited. I helped her edit it and I was the second person to read it. This is a book for all ages.
